Indigenous Language Retention Programmes: Do they create speakers?

Abstract

Language retention strategies that help Indigenous youth decide to speak and communicate with their languages will come to be realized through this research. Students, parents, grandparents and knowledge keepers alike will be given opportunities to provide their views on language programs. Their wisdom will help us discern tangible solutions for empowering present language retention programming so they may produce more fluent, Indigenous children speakers in today’s society. The study will delve the use of innovative tools and assessments strategies to help maintain and sustain Indigenous languages so they may exist for future generations. Implications of this research will surface efforts already tried by parents, schools, policy makers and leaders and assessments already being utilized within language retention programs.
