Making Space for New Library Learning: a Makerspace Journey

Abstract

While still relatively new on the educational horizon, makerspaces are growing in increasing numbers in public and school libraries as a means to provide engaging and innovative learning opportunities for students. With the newness of the makerspace phenomenon comes a need for local, well-established examples of school library makerspace models for educators to emulate. This presentation shares highlights from a graduate project that documents a teacher-librarian’s firsthand experience of investigating, planning, developing and implementing an elementary school library makerspace. The presentation showcases the work of a school-based makerspace team, detailing various stages of progress and sharing rationale for decisions and directions. Just as school libraries are places of story, this presentation shares stories of makerspace learning, growth and transformation.
