Author Guidelines

By submitting a manuscript to Emerging Perspectives: Interdisciplinary Graduate Research in Education and Psychology, the author(s) agree(s), that neither the manuscript nor any substantially similar manuscript has been published, is in press, or is under consideration elsewhere.

Format

PPLT accepts submissions in essay format and submitted as an MS Word document. Use a standard typeface and size (Times New Roman 12 pt.) and double space with left justification and margins should be 1 inch. Please include an abstract of 100-150 words. The submission should be no longer than 25 pages, excluding references, tables and figures.

Style

Language and format (headings, tables, figures, citations, and references) must conform to the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (7th Ed.) [http://www.apastyle.org/].

Tables and figures

All tables should be in an editable format (i.e., not an inserted graph). If the tables are created in Word, ensure the tables are created using columns and rows and not using tabs. All tables and figures should be placed at the end of the manuscript on separate pages but within a single document. Placement of each table and figure within the text should be clearly marked within the text as "Place table X here".

Figures should have enough resolution so that when it is printed on a letter size page, everything is legible. Whenever possible, include the original file that was used to create the figure (e.g., Excel, PowerPoint, or Photoshop).

Ensure pattern (not colour) is used to distinguish portions of the figure, or used in the legend. While the colour version of the manuscript will be made available on the PPLT Open Journal System, some readers may only be able to print a black-and-white version of the manuscript, and figures need to be legible without colour.

Running head

A running head of no more than 5 words should be included in the manuscript.

References and citations All references and citations must adhere to the APA format [http://www.apastyle.org/]. Sources cited within the text appear in parentheses after each citation and must give the author’s name, year of publication. Enclose quotes of 40 words or less in double quotation marks in the text; indent quotes longer than 40 words in block format. Page numbers must be given for all direct quotations.

Endnotes

Footnotes are not allowed and endnotes should be minimal and be listed after the text and before the Reference section, having been marked within the text by superscript numerals.

Ethics

Almost all research involving human subjects requires review and approval by a research ethics board (REB). Typically, this is an institutional research board (see for example: CFREB @ UCalgary). Research involving humans that requires but has not obtained ethics approval will not be considered for publication by EPIGREP. If you are unsure as to whether your study requires ethics approval, please consult your institution’s REB.

Submission Preparation Checklist

All submissions must meet the following requirements.

  • The first author is a graduate student.
  • The author(s) hold(s) publication rights to the data used in the manuscript.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses) and uses APA citations; and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed at the end of the text at the appropriate points, rather than in the text.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  • The instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
  • All authors agree to the submission of the manuscript.
  • Ethics approval for research involving human subjects has been obtained, if applicable.

Copyright Notice

Authors retain copyright of their papers, including publishing and commercial rights. Attribution should be given to EPIGREP when publishing a previously published article in another venue, including personal websites and blogs.
