John Stuart Mill on Freedom, Education, and Social Reform

Abstract

This paper re-examines the social philosophy of John Stuart Mill, with special emphasis on his views regarding freedom, education, and social reform. It is concluded that Mill's individualism is less unbending than it is often described , that a definite conflict between freedom and control is one of the more salient characteristics of his work, and that the complexity of his social thought is such that we need to proceed cautiously in drawing educational inferences from his writing.
