Brad Gladman

Dr. Gladman was a pilot in the Canadian Forces before returning to the University of Calgary to complete both a Bachelor and a Master of Arts degree. From there, Dr. Gladman went to England to complete a PhD in military history at University College London. He then taught a broad range of courses as a sessional instructor in the Department of History at the University of Calgary. In 2003 Dr. Gladman began working as a strategic analyst in the Directorate of Defence Analysis at National Defence Headquarters. His involvement in the work surrounding the development of the Defence Policy Statement made him a logical choice to contribute to the transformation efforts of the Canadian Forces being instituted by CDS General R. Hillier. He was thus chosen as the defence academic representative on CDS Action Team 1, whose mandate was to conduct a detailed analysis of the Command and Control of the Canadian Forces, and to recommend changes. One of those changes was the establishment of Canada Command, where Dr. Gladman is now working as a strategic analyst. His recent projects include an analysis of the Use of Force in CF Operations, and the Rules of Engagement framework; an analysis of the legal authorities for the conduct of domestic operations; and most recently, an analysis of means to ensure the operational level commands have appropriate inputs into the force development process.
