Ross Ellis: A Canadian Temperate Hero

For almost 30 years, Geoff Hayes has taught Canadian ‘war and society’ at the University of Waterloo. His initial interests in the field were inspired by his uncle, a company commander with the Lincoln and Welland Regiment during the Second World War. His history of the ‘Lincs and Winks’ was published in 1986. He has co-edited three works on Canadian military history: on Vimy Ridge; Afghanistan; as well as Canada and the Second World War, a festschrift for Terry Copp. In 2017 he published with UBC Press, Crerar’s Lieutenants: Inventing the Canadian Junior Army Officer, 1939-1945. Hayes is also a member of the Canadian Battlefields Foundation, which, since 1995, has sponsored an annual battlefield study tour for Canadian university students.
