iGEM Team Meetings: Settings for Conversations on Teaching & Learning

Abstract

Every November, the University of Calgary iGEM (international Genetically Engineered Machines) team presents their synthetic biology project to the world.  Weekly team meetings are a microcosm of the iGEM experience of bringing ideas to fruition.  The peer teaching, mentoring, and consultations that occur at these meetings are triggers for deeper conversations on teaching and learning. In the workshop described here, participants were invited to experience a simulated iGEM team meeting environment, where instead of synthetic biology, issues of teaching and learning were the subject of their conversations.

Mayi Arcellana-Panlilio, Dept. of Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Cumming School of Medicine, University of Calgary

Senior Instructor in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology, Mayi teaches in the Bachelor of Health Sciences program. She is also lead faculty mentor for the University of Calgary iGEM team that participates at the premier collegiate competition in synthetic biology featuring >200 collegiate teams from around the world.

Elke Lohmeier-Vogel, Dept. of Biological Sciences, Faculty of Science, University of Calgary

As a Senior Instructor in Biological Sciences Department at the University of Calgary, Elke teaches biology and biochemistry from first to 4th year and also coordinates and develops laboratory courses in protein purification and metabolism.  Elke was involved in the iGEM program in the summer of 2016.
