John Dewey and Homer Lane: 'The Odd Couple" Among Educational Theorists

This paper attempts to describe how John Dewey and Homer Lane might have discussed problems about educational theories and practices. The author uses a fiction al dialogue between the spirits of Dewey and Lane as a means to explain some of the major disagreements that are hinted at in the works of these two men. It is argued that Dewey and Lane disagreed about how to answer basic educational problems such as, "Should students be allowed to be personally responsible for deciding their own school curriculum?".
