Assessing Morality: The Ontario Provincial Survey of 1896

In this essay the published results of the 1896 Ontario survey into the moral standing of teachers and pupils are analyzed. The commentaries of school inspectors are used to make connections between morality and the formation of moral character. A distinction between abstract moral obligations and concrete moral customs provides a framework for understanding the moral activity under investigation.
