Today's educators are witness to a paradox: in the midst of scientific successes, technical wonders and scholarly advances the very institution that has made all this possible — the modern research-oriented university — is increasingly the object of criticism and even of outright physical attack. The health of the university is being questioned by an ever widening audience.
