In an attempt to clarify the phrase, "Retreat from Culture," I would like to offer the concept of "culture" published exactly a century ago by Matthew Arnold, the English poet and critic. He spoke of culture in terms of "the pursuit of perfection," by which he meant "the harmonious expansion of all the powers which make the beauty and worth of human nature." The cultured man has "a liberal and intelligent eagerness about the things of the mind." He wants to "see things as they are."Téléchargements
