Résumé

Recent critiques of educational reform have called for new theories of community. Buddhist principles of attention, interdependence, emptiness, and compassion are examined and evaluated against assumptions, arguments, and advice offered in current reform literature. Buddhism redirects educational reform toward the practice of meditation. Buddhism knits into a seamless philosophy freedom, compassion, and engagement for individuals in community. The policies, procedures, and practices of educating children in schools given Buddhist teachings center on paying attention, being compassionate, experiencing freedom, and living together with others rather than some hoped for but never achieved vision of success.
