About the Conference

The Peer Beyond Graduate Research Conference (PBGRC) has become a cornerstone event for University of Calgary graduate students since its inception in 2017, offering a platform for scholars to engage in meaningful dialogue and share their groundbreaking research. Founded and led by the UCalgary Graduate Students’ Association (UCGSA), this annual conference brings together scholars to celebrate and showcase their work across a wide spectrum of disciplines.

Supported presentation formats include 

  • Classic Research Talks (10 minutes presentation, 2 minutes Q&A)

  • Poster Sessions (5 minute talks followed by Q&A in the poster hall)

  • Non-Traditional Formats [upon request] (workshops, art exhibitions, performances)

Peer Beyond Graduate Research Conference 2025

The 2025 conference was an overwhelming success, drawing over 150 participants who contributed to an intellectually vibrant and collaborative atmosphere. The event highlighted a diverse and impressive array of research, showcasing the depth and breadth of academic inquiry at the University of Calgary. Presentations ranged from innovative approaches, such as using cartoons and participatory art exhibitions to communicate complex research ideas, to pioneering work on developing new methods for supporting the mental health of individuals living with depression in long-term care settings. Additionally, the conference featured cutting-edge environmental science research, including a compelling study on the population structure of bull trout and their hybridization with brook trout across the Eastern Slopes of Alberta.

The event served as a powerful reminder of the dynamic interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary work taking place at UCalgary. Researchers from diverse fields came together, exchanging ideas and forging connections that transcended traditional academic boundaries. The Peer Beyond Graduate Research Conference remains a testament to the innovative spirit of our graduate students and the vibrant intellectual community at the University of Calgary. It is more than just an event; it is a celebration of the transformative power of research and the essential role graduate students play in shaping the future of academia and society.
